Franci DuPerron of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, who lost her mother to a Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) injection, is one of the first people in Canada to be compensated for a family member’s death under the country’s Vaccine Injury Support Program.
The program’s payments have not been publicly announced. (Related: Covid vaccine victims could seek monetary compensation under new bill proposed by Senate Republicans.)
In January last year, DuPerron’s 79-year-old mother died shortly after taking Moderna’s mRNA injection. “She was gone in 15 minutes. I was stunned and I couldn’t wrap my head around it,” said DuPerron.
The death was caused by a serious anaphylactic shock. What happened to her mother is considered as rare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only 108 such cases had been reported out of the first four million doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.
DuPerron’s mother had pre-existing conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and diabetes and she was nervous about taking the vaccine.
After her mother’s death from the injection, DuPerron consulted a lawyer. She learned that the vaccine companies could not be held liable because the vaccines were developed under emergency use conditions. But the lawyer did tell her about the Vaccine Injury Support Program, and DuPerron wanted other people to be aware that it is out there.
The program started in June 2021 and it has 774 claims as of June 1 this year. However, only eight claims are reported to have been approved by the program’s medical review board over the previous year.
DuPerron’s claim went through the process relatively fast because it was such a clear-cut case. Her mother died within minutes of being injected with the COVID-19 jab. The coroner’s report and autopsy confirmed she had died from an allergic reaction to the injection.
“There was no doubt in anyone’s mind it was the vaccine that killed her,” DuPerron said.
But she still encountered some bumps along the way. For example, she was asked by officials to present her mother’s vaccine passport despite the fact that she died months before that program even began.
DuPerron had been hoping to receive just $8,000 to cover the funeral expenses of her mother. The amount she received was substantially more than that, although she cannot say how much. She said the amount was irrelevant.
“What dollar amount can you put on a life? There is no price,” said DuPerron, adding that she gave most of the payment to the family.
DuPerron said she wants to see more transparency about the vaccines and their adverse effects. She lamented the fact that very little has been reported about the death of her mother.
A career cop, DuPerron related that she had been vaccinated thrice and that her blood sugar rose every time she got the vaccine. The first time she took the vaccine, it took months for her health to go back to normal. With the second jab, it was a matter of weeks.
